GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina senior golfer Markus Leandersson has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large Third-Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Leandersson becomes the first men's golfer in school history to receive the accolade and 22nd student-athlete overall.
At least one ECU student-athlete has earned Academic All-America honors each season since 2005 with a total of eight honorees since 2001.
Leandersson posted a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 as a finance major and received the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal each of the past four years. He was named first-team Academic All-District III this season after earning second-team all-district honors as junior. He was also named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar a year ago.
On the golf course this season, Leandersson compiled the lowest 18-hole (73.28) and 54-hole (219.4) stroke average on the team as he competed in seven tournaments. He recorded four top 20 finishes, including a fifth-place finish at the Furman Intercollegiate and an eighth-place finish at the C-USA Championships.
He completed his eligibility with a career 18-hole stroke average of 74.94, seventh-lowest in school history.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution.
