
Varner Leads Pirates At VCU Shootout

MANKAIN-SABOT, Va. --- East Carolina University sophomore Harold Varner carded a one-under 71 in the final round to finish in a six-way tie for fourth place at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club Tuesday. Varner was one of only seven players to shoot under-par during Tuesday's final round to earn the first top five finish of his collegiate career.
Varner improved 16 places from his standing of 20th after the second round. Varner carded a two-over 74 in the first round before a shooting even-par 72 in the second round to leave at two-over heading into the final 18 holes of competition.
ECU had three additional players conclude the event in the top 50 individually with David Watkins finishing the event in a tie for 20th place with a three-round tally of four-over 220 (73-73-74) and Conner Sock finish with a six-over 222 (75-71-76) to place 30th. Adam Stephenson shot par through the first two rounds before carding a nine-over Tuesday to finish with a score of 225 (74-70-81) in 45th place.
As a team, the Pirates fired a three-round total of 27-over 891 (297-293-301) to finish tied for 10th.
UNC Wilmington carded the team low round of the tournament in the first round to claim top honors as a team. The Seahawks' eight-over team score of 872 (281-290-301) left them five strokes ahead of second-place Virginia (287-294-296=877) and seven strokes in front of third-place Wake Forest (294-286-299=879).
Charlotte's Corey Nagy claimed individual medalist honors with a 54-hole tally of six-under 210 (69-71-70). Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest finished as the runner-up with a four-under 212 (70-67-75). UNCW's Derek Wallace was the only other player to shoot par or better as carded a 216 (68-73-75) to finish at even-par in third place.
