Norman, Okla. - The East Carolina men's golf team, which included two seniors who were named All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America, is one of eleven teams given special recognition by the organization's president for having cumulative team grade-point averages of 3.5 or better for the 2008-09 academic year.
East Tennessee State (Division I), St. Mary's of Texas (Division II), Gustavus Adolphus (Division III), Savannah College of Art and Design (NAIA), McLennan CC (NJCAA DI) and Tyler JC (NJCAA DII) were named Academic National Champions for their respective divisions announced the GCAA. East Tennessee State posted the highest recorded team GPA with 3.78. A total of 82 teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher and earned All-Academic Team recognition.
In addition to ECU, Belmont, Detroit Mercy, East Tennessee State, Georgia Tech, Gustavus Adolphus, Ohio Dominican, Rice, SCAD, Seton Hall and St. Mary's (Texas) were also accorded President's Special Recognition status for earning team GPAs of 3.50 or better.
"With only seven Division I teams earning this honor, and only 11 across all divisions, this is quite an accomplishment," said Pirate head coach Press McPhaul. "I'm very proud of our young men and the effort and dedication they have toward excelling academically."
Markus Leandersson and Andre Thorsen who graduated last May, both earned All-America Scholar awards by the GCAA, while eight members of the team made the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or better for the year).
