East Carolina Opens Season On A Positive Note

NORFOLK, Va. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad captured three wins in its opening weekend by outlasting Old Dominion 4-3 on Friday and by defeating Norfolk State 5-1 and Morgan State 7-0 in the Old Dominion Team Shootout College on Saturday.

Old Dominion challenged the Pirates early on by winning its opening three singles matches at the No. 1, No.2 and No.3 positions. Massimo Mannino captured ECU's first point by defeating Krzysztof Muzalewski in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Freshmen John Schmitt won his first spring match over Albert Ochagavia 6-4, 6-3. Bryan Oakley wrapped up singles play defeating Alfredo Rodriguez 6-0, 6-3.

ECU faired better in doubles play winning two of three. In the No.1 spot Henrik Skalmerud and Hofstra transfer Stian Tvedt hold off Tobias Fanselow and Benjamin Chomette, 9-8. The Pirates were setback as Krzysztof Muzalewski and Yakov Diskin gave Jaroslav Horvath and Mannimo their first doubles loss 8-3.

On Saturday ECU took on the Norfolk State Spartans and the Bears of Morgan State . East Carolina dropped the first singles match but quickly clinched the first victory by outscoring the Spartans 48-8 in just four contests. Doubles play was not scheduled for this match. In the second math-up the Pirates won all of its singles matches in straight sets and dominated in doubles action with a compiled a 24-8 record in three matches.

The Pirates will continue on the road next Sunday to take on the No.52 N.C. State Wolfpack. The match is set for 11am at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
