Nine Records Set During Purple-Gold Meet

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina swimming and diving team capped off its preseason with the annual Purple-Gold meet Friday at Minges Natatorium. Nine meet records were set with seven multi-event winners.
"That's the most records we've ever set during a Purple-Gold meet," Pirate head coach Rick Kobe said. "We're off to a great start. We have a very talented team and today they showed what kind of times they are capable of producing.
"I'm very excited about the potential we have this season."
The women's team established five meet records led by senior Jenna Stewart who set a new mark in the 50-yard freestyle and also won the 100-yard freestyle race. Stewart teamed with Kelsey Brosi, Pamela Hess and Kali Gaskill to set the 200-yard freestyle relay record.
Junior Natalia Favoreto swept the breaststroke events with freshman Anna Gibas winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke. Each set meet records in the 100-yard race of her respective event.
The performance of senior Andrew Stoker highlighted the men's competition as he won both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly in record-setting time.
Junior Roman Sandler touched first in a trio of events. Sandler claimed first-place in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke as well as the 200-yard IM. He was also part of the meet record-setting 200-yard medley relay team along with Tommy Ryan, J.D. Flanagan and Geoffrey Bobsin.
Ryan was also a multi-event winner taking first-place in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke.
Senior Thiago Cavalcanti earned first-place in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle in addition to helping establish a new meet record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshmen Hyatt Gaston and Conor Yarbrough joined Bobsin and Cavalcanti on the relay team.
ECU officially opens the 2010-11 season on Friday, Oct. 8 at North Carolina. the meet is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at Koury Natatorium.
