ECU Drops Season-Opening Dual Meets To UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- East Carolina opened the 2010-11 season with a pair of dual meet losses to North Carolina at Koury Natatorium Friday.
The Tar Heels, who finished the 2009-10 season ranked among the Top-15 on both the men's and women's side, posted a 171-117 victory over the Pirate men, while the Lady Pirates fell 165-124.
"It was a great learning experience for our young team," Pirate head coach Rick Kobe said. "We did have some good times today and we going to build off those things and prepare for our home opener against Davidson on Friday."
Seniors Andrew Stoker and Andrew Johnson were the only members of the men's team to record above a third-place finish. Johnson claimed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.83), as did Stoker in the 100-yard butterfly (50.40). Stoker also picked up a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.99).
Fellow senior Thiago Cavalcanti posted a pair of third-place finishes in the 500 (4:40.66) and 1000-yard freestyle (9:32.38).
Other third-place finishes for the Pirates included: Roman Sandler (52.99) 100-yard backstroke, Ailton Temotio (48.35) 100-yard freestyle and Michael Jolly (1:56.74) 200-yard backstroke.
On the ladies side, senior Jenna Stewart was the only Pirate swimmer to earn more than one second-place finish Friday night. Stewart claimed second-place in the 50 (23.69) and 100-yard freestyle (51.72). Sophomore Holly Berenotto finished just behind Stewart in third-place in the 100 free (53.90).
Junior Kelsey Brosi and Natalia Favoreto each posted a second and third-place finish. Brosi took second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.66) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.42). Favoreto claimed second-place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.30) and third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.54)
Freshman Anna Gibas (58.31, 100 back), junior Brittany Radcliffe (5:13.37 500 free) and sophomore Pamela Hess (59.38, 100 fly) also placed among the top three in their respective events.
Junior Meghan Coyne, who qualified for the NCAA Zone Regional in her first meet of the season, tallied the second-highest score on both the one and three-meter springboard this afternoon.
The Pirates return to action Friday, Oct. 15, against Davidson in their first home meet of the year. The meet is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Minges Natatorium.
