
Pirate Tennis Takes Road Doubleheader

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - East Carolina men's tennis squad posted its first doubleheader sweep of the season with a 4-3 win over James Madison and a 6-1 shutout of Mary Washington Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
The pair of wins improved the Pirates' spring dual match record to 6-1 while the Dukes and Eagles dropped to 1-4 and 1-2, respectively.
In the opener against the James Madison, ECU clinched the doubles point after 8-5 and 8-4 wins by tandems Jaroslav Horvath/John Schmitt and Bryan Oakley/Stephen Whitwell before taking three of six singles battles to notch the team win.
Henrik Skalmerud, Massimo Mannino and Oakley all came out on top in singles play at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 positions. Skalmerud outlasted Stephen Hardy (6-0, 7-6), Mannino dispatched Ville Maaranen (6-0, 6-0) and Oakley defeated Yaroslav Voznenko (6-2, 6-2).
Against Mary Washington in the second match, the Pirates quickly clinched the win by outscoring the Eagles 24-10 in three doubles wins and posting 10 straight-set singles victories. East Carolina quickly clinched the win by claiming five of the six flights. Horvath (No. 1), Whitwell (No. 2), Skalmerud (No. 3), Pablo Nunez Palmieri (No. 4) and Schmitt (No.5) each produced straight-set triumphs.
Mary Washington recorded its only win when Will Apperson held off Stian Tvedt (2-6, 6-1, 10-7) in a No. 6 singles matchup.
The Pirates will return to action Wednesday when they welcome Liberty to the ECU Tennis Complex for their home opener. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
