GREENVILLE, N.C. - No. 11 East Carolina dropped its opening series to No. 2 Virginia over the weekend. The Pirates' lone win was Saturday, 6-1, behind a spectacular pitching performance from left-hander Kevin Brandt, who held the Cavaliers to just five hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. Freshman John Wooten homered in his first collegiate at-bat and later pushed across another run with a single up the middle.

Pirate Hitter-of-the-Week
John Wooten, INF, Freshman
Wooten started two of ECU's three games at first base against No. 2 Virginia, where he batted .375 (3-for-8) with two home runs, four RBI, three runs scored and has a 1.125 slugging percentage ... Smacked home runs in back-to-back games ... In his first collegiate at-bat, game two of the series, hit a solo home run to right field giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead ... Recorded his second hit of the game in the eighth inning with an RBI single up the middle ... Hit his second home run of the season in the Pirates seven-run eighth inning, a two-run shot to right field ... Recorded 18 putouts at first with no errors.
Pirate Pitcher-of-the-Week
Kevin Brandt, Sophomore, LHP
Brandt picked up the win Saturday against No. 2 Virginia after allowing one run on five hits in 6.2 innings of work ... He fanned four and walked three and owns a 1.35 ERA ... For Brandt it was his fourth career win against a Top 25 club (No. 11 Okla. State/2008, No. 1 North Carolina/2008, No. 22 South Carolina/2008) ... He retired eight of the first nine batters faced with a pair of punch outs ... Held preseason All-America candidate Jarrett Parker hitless as well as Dan Grovatt and Steven Proscia, who went for a combined 6-for-11 in the series opener with six RBI and six runs scored ... In all he faced 28 batters and posted a 1.35 ERA, while holding opposing hitters to a .200 (5-for-25) batting average.
PIRATE NOTES:
Dustin Harrington batted .385 (5-for-13) in the Pirates opening series against No. 2 Virginia ... He drove in four runs, scored four, roped on double and extended his current hitting streak to 11 games with a home run in his first at-bat of game three ... Recorded two multi-hit games and now has 50 for his career.
Cam Freeman and Austin Homan started all three games and current lead the team with a .400 batting average ... Freeman collected a hit in all three contests including a two-hit performance in game two ... Homan recorded a pair of multi-hit games (six for career) and drove in two runs.
Friday starter Seth Maness suffered his first regular season loss since his All-America freshman campaign when he dropped a 5-4 decision against Tulane on May 9 ... Maness allowed four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 5.2 innings ... He retired nine of his first 10 batters faced and 11 of his first 15 hitters.
Head Coach Billy Godwin recorded his 162nd win in game two of the series moving into sole possession of fourth place on ECU's all-time wins list ... Saturday's game was also his 600th career game as a college head coach.
In the three game series, seven players experienced their first action as a Pirate ... Junior college transfer Zach Woods (RHP) appeared in game one ... Bryan Bass (2B) and Wooten (1B) started their first games, while Philip Clark (OF) and Chris Gosik (OF) made pinch hit appearances on Sunday ... Freshman lefties Tyler Joyner and Jake Harris got time on the bump each working 1.1 innings in game three.
During the opening series, the Pirates ushered in 14,922 fans (4,974 avg.) which included the largest opening day crowd at Clark-LeClair Stadium (5,012) ... Saturday's attendance was announced as 5,136 marking the first time in school history the Pirates had back-to-back crowds of 5,000-plus ... After the first weekend of play across the country, the Pirates rank 10th nationally in total attendance.
