
Women's Tennis Falls At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Furman rebounded from a doubles sweep by claiming four of six singles matches to hand East Carolina a 4-3 non-conference setback in women's tennis action Thursday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center.
East Carolina jumped out to an early 1-0 team advantage with a doubles sweep. After Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang opened with an 8-5 victory over Jennifer Betts and Michele Stanford at the No.2 position, Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier followed with an 8-6 victory over Lauren Kline and Jessica Preeg at the No. 2 flight to clinch the point. Natalie Collins and Tamara Sachs posted an 8-7 win over Monica Arguello and Olivia Maurice to finish doubles play.
In singles play, the Paladins claimed the three opening matches as Arguello (No. 1) defeated Cook 6-1, 6-1, while Kline (No. 2) def. LePottier 6-2,6-2 and Betts (No. 6) posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sachs.
Vogel and Collins claimed victories at the No. 3 and No. 4 slots to even the match at 3-3. The No. 5 singles match would go into three sets to decide a winner. Despite a second set comeback Zhang could not outlast Susan Bitetti and would fall 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. The victory, Furman's fourth-straight, improved the squad's record to 7-5 while ECU dropped to 10-6.
The Pirates will take nine days off before hosting Limestone, Friday, March 26 at the ECU Tennis Complex. The first serve is set for 5:30 p.m. ET
