Greenville, S.C. -- East Carolina fired an opening round 303 to earn a tie for eighth after after one round at the 41st Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course on Friday. Chattanooga and Clemson each fired an opening round 289 to grab a two-stroke lead over third-place Western Carolina.Western Carolina's Tanner Briele posted a tournament record round of 65 to take the individual lead after 18 holes.
Briele notched seven birdies in a bogey-free round to establish a new course record on the recently renovated Furman Golf Course and build a three-stroke lead over second place Adam Black of Presbyterian who carded an opening round 68. Derek Rende fired a three-under 69 to hold third place.
Sophomore David Watkins opened the Furman Intercollegiate with a one-under 71 and tie for sixth-place. Jake Colley carded a four-over 76 and Harold Varner shot five-over 77. Conner Sock finished the first round at seven-over 79, while junior Warren Straub completed play at nine-over.
The second round is set for Saturday with play scheduled to begin from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees at 8:00 a.m. Final round action is slated for Sunday morning.
