Greenville, S.C. -- East Carolina dropped back to 17th in the team standings after two rounds at the 41st Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course on Saturday. The Pirates carded a team total of 312 during the second round of play to fall 10 spots.
Chattanooga's Steven Fox fired a four-under par 68 to grab sole possession of first place and help the Mocs into a three-stroke lead over Clemson
Fox (70-68=138) birdied six holes, including four in a row, to guide Chattanooga (289-291=580) to a three-over 291. The Mocs lead second place Clemson (289-294=583) by three strokes and hold an 11-stroke advantage over third place Old Dominion (293-298=591) entering Sunday's final round.
ECU sophomore David Watkins fired a seven-over 79 Saturday and fell back into a tie for 29th at six-over par (71-79=150). Fellow sophomore Jake Colley recorded the Pirates' best individual round on day two with a three-over 75. Colley is tied for 36th at seven-over par (76-75=151). Harold Varner and Warren Straub also carded scores of seven-over. Varner is 12-over (77-79=156) for the tourney, while Straub is 16-over (81-79=160) along with Conner Sock (79-81=160).
Sunday's final round action begins at 8 a.m. with teams teeing off of both No. 1 and No. 10. The Pirates, playing with Davidson and Samford, will be the first off the tee. The final pairing of Chattanooga, Clemson and Old Dominion tees off at 1 p.m. on the front nine.
