GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad used a doubles sweep and wins in five of six singles matches to hand George Washington a 6-1 non-conference setback Sunday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
After the Pirates' tandem of Jaroslav Horvath and Henrik Skalmerud opened doubles play with an 8-4 defeat of Ugur Atalay and Erik Hannah at the No. 1 slot, East Carolina clinched the doubles point when Massimo Mannino and Bryan Oakley followed with an 8-6 victory over Richard Blumenfeld and Yan Levinski. Stian Tvedt and Stephen Whitwell defeated Chris Kushma and Ken Mkrtchian 8-6 to complete the sweep.
ECU controlled singles play with wins at the other five slots, after dropping the No. 4 singles match. Kushma (No. 4) handled Pablo Nunez Palmieri 6-3, 6-0 to tie the score at one a piece but that would be the Colonials only score.
Oakley picked up a point at No. 6 singles after beating Blumenfeld in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4 before John Schmitt displaced Mkrtchian 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 and Whitwell clinched the Pirates' team win by recording a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Levinski at the No. 2 flight.
To finish out the match Mannino posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Hannah at No. 3 and Horvath outlasted Atalay 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 at No. 1.
The Pirates will open league play on Thursday when they travel to New Orleans, La. to face UAB.
