HONOLULU, Hawai’i – Nine runs scored with two outs and three home runs made the difference as Hawai’i defeated East Carolina 10-0 Saturday night at the Bank of Hawai’i Invitational Tournament. The Rainbow Wahine’s Kanani Pu’u-Warren and Traci Yoshikawa each hit a three-run home run and scored twice to lead the way. The loss drops the Pirates to 7-9 as Hawai’i improves to 11-6.
Junior Toni Paisley (5-6) took the loss for the Pirates as she pitched two-and-two-thirds innings, surrendering six runs on seven hits while striking out four. Sophomore Faith Sutton went the final one-and-a-third, allowing four runs on four hits. Hawai’i’s Kaia Parnaby (6-3) picked up the victory, shutting out ECU on one hit. She also fanned four.
The Pirates got a leadoff single from Marina Gusman-Brown in the top of the second. With one out, she stole second base. Sophomore Priscilla Velasquez nearly brought her in with a hard hit down the first-base line, but the ball was just inches foul. Gusman-Brown was left stranded as a strikeout and groundout ended the inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Hawai’i scored three runs with two outs to take a 3-0 lead. Yoshikawa sent a pop-up just over the glove of outstretched shortstop Kaui Tom and into left field for a one-out single. Alexandra Aguirre followed with a double to the gap in right center, putting runners on second and third with one out. A walk to Pu’u-Warren loaded the bases and brought up Katie Grimes, who struck out looking. Paisley fell behind Kelly Majam 3-1 and Majam sent a single into right field that plated Yoshikawa and Aguirre. On the next pitch, Jessica Iwata singled through the left side, driving in Pu’u-Warren for a 3-0 lead.
Hawai’i tacked on three more runs with two down in the bottom of the third to make it 6-0. Amanda Tauali’i led off with a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Brynne Buchanan. Aguirre singled to left field and came home with Buchanan on a Pu’u-Warren home run to right center.
The bottom of the fourth saw the Rainbow Wahine make it 10-0 as Iwata homered to left center with one out and Yoshikawa hit a two-out, three-run shot. Melissa Gonzalez singled to center field with one down and was replaced by pinch runner Mikalemi Tagab-Cruz. Jenna Rodriguez singled and pinch runner Rachel Paragas came in. Tagab-Cruz and Paragas both scored on Yoshikawa’s long ball.
The Pirates could manage only one base runner in the top of the fifth, sealing the Hawai’i victory.
East Carolina plays two more games tomorrow beginning at 3:00 p.m. EST with the opponents to be determined by the outcome of tonight’s contest between Hawai’i and No. 1 Washington.
