HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The East Carolina softball team wrapped up the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sunday evening. A steal of home in the first inning by senior Charina Sumner was the only run the Pirates (8-10) needed as sophomore Faith Sutton blanked the Redhawks (1-13) for the second time in as many days. It was the team's third 2-0 victory of the season.
Saturday afternoon Sutton (3-3) shut out Seattle on one hit. Today, she allowed three hits and struck out eight in the first seven-inning complete game of her East Carolina career. Hannah Klein (0-3) was nearly as impressive, limiting the Pirates to five hits and a walk.
East Carolina struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sumner led off with a single to right center and advanced to third on a single by classmate Christina Merrida. Merrida stole second base and Sumner came home on the play for a 1-0 lead. Two groundouts and a fly-out ended the inning without any more damage.
Neither team managed another base runner until the top of the fourth, when Katie Antich led off with a double to right center for the Redhawks' first hit. After a strikeout, Antich advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sutton retired the next two batters on strikeouts to leave Antich on third.
Senior Cristen Aona hit a two-out double to right center in the bottom of the fourth. Classmate Kaui Tom followed with a sharp grounder to the second baseman, who dove and threw out Tom at first to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Klein led off with a single through the left side. Rose Harrington came in to pinch run and stole second base after a pop-out. A strikeout and fly-out, however, kept Seattle from tying the game.
The Redhawks' Theresa Clark drew a two-out walk in the top of the sixth but Jessica Amador ended the inning by striking out looking.
The bottom of the sixth had the Pirates add their final run with a two-out rally. Senior Vanessa Moreno drew a walk, Aona singled and Tom drove home Moreno with a base hit up the middle.
In its final inning, Seattle's Sandra Hernandez reached on a fielding error with two outs. Jessica Ulrich followed with a single to right field just out of the reach of a diving Cicely Lopez at second base. Sutton recovered to retire Megan MacIsaac on a groundout to close the game.
East Carolina resumes action Wednesday with a doubleheader at No. 22 Fresno State. The first game is scheduled to begin at 9:00 p.m. EST.
