ECU Finishes Third At Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. - East Carolina posted the second-lowest team total (289) of the final round to move from seventh-place and finish third at the 13th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the historic par 70, 6,565-yard Palmetto Golf Club. The Pirates shot nine-over par as a team Tuesday and posted a three-round total of 868 (295-284-289).
Chattanooga carded a cumulative team score of 855 to earn the overall team victory. Chattanooga has now claimed the victory in the event in two of the last three years as they also won the tournament with an 850 in the 2008 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Chattanooga's team total of 855 was seven better than second place Clemson. The Tigers carded a team total of 862 (288-283-291) to finish second and 13 better than ECU. The Pirates finished one stroke ahead of fourth-place Liberty and two in front of fifth-place Virginia.
Virginia's Ben Kohles followed up his tournament record-breaking 63 in the second round with a two-over-par 72 in the third round. Kohles' 205 total (70-63-72) helped him beat second-place finisher Robert Karlsson (208) by three strokes for individual medalist honors at the 13th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. Karlsson was the defending individual champion in the event.
ECU's Harold Varner shot par on Tuesday to finish the tournament in third place at one-under (74-65-70=209). Junior Warren Straub finished tied for 10th at four-over (72-71-71=214) after carding a one-over on the final 18 holes.
Despite shooting six-over, ECU sophomore David Watkins moved up 15 spots in the final standings and finished tied for 22nd after beginning the day in 37th. He completed the 54-hole event at 10-over (79-75-76=220).
The Pirates will next play in the 2010 Furman Intercollegiate March 19-20.
