
Pirates Fall To S.C. State in Home Finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Laura Bosneag and Beate Valdane's 8-6 victory over Petra Vogel and Yilian Zhang (ECU); in a No. 2 doubles match earned the Bulldogs' the opening point and eventually proved to be the difference as South Carolina State edged East Carolina 4-3 in non-conference women's tennis action Monday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs who extended their road record to 4-3, are now 13-5 overall. The Lady Pirates dropped to 16-8 on the season and end their homestand at 8-1.
South Carolina State's Maria Craciun and Daria Sekerina opened doubles play with an 8-4 win over Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier at the No. 1 slot before the No. 2 pair claimed the point. The No.3 matchup went unfinished. The two teams split singles, with each winning one in straight sets, ECU taking two by default while South Carolina State took the two three-set battles.
Vogel went up 5-0 over Fanni Fricska before taking the win by default and extending her win record at No.2 to 5-1 and 16-4 overall. At No. 3, Natalie Collins also picked up a first set win (7-5) before the default going up 2-0 in the over Craciun. Collins is now 15-5 overall with a 10-match win streak in addition to being 13-5 at the No. 3 slot. LePottier knocked off Valdane 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 position to put ECU up 3-2 but South Carolina would comeback. LePottier is 12-10 overall with a 6-0 record at No. 4 this season.
The Bulldogs would claim the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 matches. At No.1, Sekerina handled Cook 6-3, 6-2 before Bosneag came back to win the No. 5 matchup over Zhang 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Chen outlasted Abby Richmond 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No.6.
The Pirates will turn their attention Saturday's match with conference foe UCF. The First serve is set for 10 a.m.
