BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Timely two-out hitting and a grand slam by Ellis Lowe in the third inning helped Campbell to a 12-5 win over No. 21 East Carolina Tuesday night at Taylor Field. With the win the Camels even their record at 19-19, while the Pirates' (24-13) six game win streak comes to an end.
Ben Brown (3-3) picked up the win after working six strong innings where he allowed one run on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts. The Camels bullpen scattered six hits over the final three innings surrendering four runs and striking out six.
Joseph Hughes (1-1) suffered the loss after being torched for eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout in 2 1/3 innings. Freshman D.J. Jauss worked 3 2/3 innings allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts, while Mike Anderson and Patrick Somers each tossed a full inning out of the bullpen allowing a hit and recording two punch outs. Lance Honeycutt made his third appearance of the year giving up three runs (all earned) on one hit without recording an out.
The Camels jumped all over the Pirates in the first three frames taking a commanding 9-0 lead. With two outs in the first Josh Holskey singled through the left side scoring Ellis for a 1-0 advantage. Lowe reached on an error by John Wooten then took second on a wild pitch before Alex Aycoth reached the second error of the inning, this time by Chris Gosik at third, setting up the first run of the game.
Five hits in the second, all with two outs, extended Campbell's lead to 5-0. Blake Boyce singled to left center with one out then took second on Cameron Nelson's ground out. D.J. Johnson and Lowe recorded back-to-back base hits that pushed Boyce across. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a Hughes wild pitch and Aycoth drew a free pass to load the bases for Zach Johnson, who singled up the middle scoring both D.J. Johnson and Lowe. The final run of the stanza came off the bat of Holskey, who doubled down the left field line plating Aycoth.
Lowe's first career grand accounted for all four Campbell runs in the third inning putting the game out of reach at 9-0. A Boyce single and back-to-back walks by Cameron Nelson and D.J. Johnson loaded the bases for Lowe.
ECU finally got a run across in the fifth on Zach Wright's sac fly to center that scored Trent Whitehead cutting the lead to eight, 9-1. Whitehead walked, Wooten singled to right and Kyle Roller walked to load the bases with one out for Wright. The sophomore catcher hit a towering fly ball to center for the second out scoring Whitehead, but Wooten failed to tag up at second and was doubled up to end the stanza.
Harris' RBI single in the seventh highlighted a two-run seventh that drew the Pirates within six, 9-3. Roller singled through the right side, Wright reached on a wild pitch strikeout and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Harris then followed with an infield single to Kevin Nelson at short that scored Roller and Wright crossed home when the ball kicked off Nelson's glove.
Campbell padded its lead with three runs in the eighth and ECU scored two in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring at 12-5.
The Pirates will be back in action on Wednesday when they host in-state rival N.C. State at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (EDT).
