SORRENTO, Fla. - The East Carolina University men's golf team is in fifth-place after the opening round of play at the 2010 Conference USA Championship at the par 72, 7,152-yard RedTail Golf Club.
The Pirates fired a 13-over-par 301 Sunday and trail first-place UCF (292) by nine strokes entering Monday's second round. The Knights had four top 10 individual finishes on day one and own a three-stroke lead over second-place Rice (295) and a five-stroke advantage over third-place Tulsa (297). Memphis placed fourth with a 300.
ECU freshman Michael Marshburn and junior Warren Straub each carded a two-over 74 to earn a tie for 10th-place. The duo trails leader Rob Laird of Tulsa by five strokes after 18 holes of play. Laird shot a three-uner 69 as he carded four birdies and an eagle on 12.
Pirate sophomore Jake Colley is tied for 21st at four-over (76) with sophomore Harold Varner in the clubhouse one stroke behind his teammate tied for 27th. David Watkins shot eight-over (80) Sunday and is tied for 43rd.
Rice senior Christopher Brown stands alone in second-place at two-under (70) followed by teammate Michael Whitehead and UCF's Simon Ward tied for third at even-par (72). Five other players are tied for fifth-place at one-over.
The winner of the C-USA Championship receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. Round two is scheduled to begin Monday morning at 8 a.m.
