Pirates Still In Fifth At C-USA Championships

SORRENTO, Fla. - The East Carolina men's golf team maintained its hold of fifth-place at the 2010 Conference USA Championships on Monday. The Pirates fired a team total of six-over-par 294 during the second round of play and stand at 19-over (301-294=595) for the championship.
ECU sophomore Harold Varner carded a two-under 70 to move up 20 spots into a tie for seventh-place at three-over (77-70=147). Freshman Michael Marshburn took one stroke off his first round score and is tied with Varner and six other golfers for seventh-place after shooting three-over (74-73=147) Monday.
Junior Warren Straub feel from 10th-place to 25th with a four-over 76 in round two and is six-over (74-76=150) for the championship. Sophomore Jake Colley equaled his score from Sunday with a four-over 76 and is tied for 29th at eight-over (76-76=152). David Watkins shaved five strokes off his first round tally with a three-over 75 Monday and moved up four place into 39th-place with a 36-hole score of 11-over 155 (80-75).
After a two-hour delay due to heavy rains overnight, 55 golfers resumed play Monday on the par 72, 7,152-yard RedTail Golf Club under sunny skies and temperatures in the high 80's and ended with UCF clinging to a five-stroke lead over second-place Rice.
UCF shot even-par 288 Monday and have compiled a 36-hole team tally of four-over 580 (292-288). Rice took five shots off its first-round score and finished with a 290 for the day. The Owls are nine-over (295-290=585) after two rounds of competition.
Knights' sophomore Brad Schneider carded a low round of 68 today, but Rice senior Christopher Brown moved atop the leader board with a two-day tally of five-under-par (70-69=139). First round leader Rob Laird shot par Monday and dropped into a tie with Schneider for second-place at three-under. Brown, Laird and Schneider will be paired in the final group tomorrow. The final threesome will tee off at 9:21 a.m. EDT at No. 1.
SMU surpassed the Pirates and moved into fourth place with a 291 for the day and will start things off at 8 a.m. EDT. The Mustangs will be paired with ECU and sixth-place Southern Miss on Tuesday. UAB had the second-best team score of the day with a 289 and will tee off with Houston and Memphis at 8:45 a.m. from hole No. 10. Marshall and UTEP round out the 11-team field and will be paired together for an 8 a.m. tee time off No. 10.
