Pirates Finish Sixth At C-USA Championships

SORRENTO, Fla. --- East Carolina fired a one-over-par 289 Tuesday to earn a sixth-place finish at the 2010 Conference USA Men's Golf Championships at the par 72, 7,152-yard RedTail Golf Club. The Pirates finished with a total score of 20-over 884 (301-294-289), one stroke behind fifth-place Tulsa and five back of fourth-place and 43rd-ranked SMU.
UCF shot 10-under Tuesday to claim the team title with an overall score of six-under 858 (292-288-278). The Knights were 18 strokes better than second-place Rice (295-290-291=876) and Southern Miss (304-292-280=876), which each shot 12-over for the championship.
Rice's Christopher Brown earned individual medalist honors by shooting seven-under 209 (70-69-70) for the tournament. Brown won by five over Wes Carter of Southern Miss and a trio of UCF players who finished in a four-way tie for second.
ECU sophomore Harold Varner carded a three-under 69 on the final 18 holes to finish at even-par (77-70-679=216) and tie for sixth-place with last year's individual medalist Simon Ward of UCF and Tulsa's Rob Laird.
Pirate freshman Michael Marshburn carded a three-day total of five-over 221 (74-73-74) to finish tied for 16th. Junior Warren Straub (74-76-73=223) finished two strokes behind Marshburn in 21st with sophomore Jake Colley earning at 27th-place finish at nine-over (76-76-73=225). Sophomore David Watkins carded a six-over 78 during the final round and finished tied for 49th with a 17-over 233 (80-75-78).
