Varner Earns NCAA Bid

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina sophomore Harold Varner was awarded an individual entry into the 2010 NCAA Golf Championships by the NCAA Men's Golf committee on Monday. Varner will compete at The Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn. May 20-22.
"We are very proud of Harold," ECU Head Coach Press McPhaul said. "He got better as the season progressed, playing through injuries. He worked very hard all year and will represent us for very well.
"We are very excited to be represented at the NCAA Championships for the first time in 17 years. This is a big step forward for our program."
Varner is the first ECU men's golfer to be rewarded with an individual entry into the NCAA Men's Golf Championships since Mike Teague was selected to compete individually in 1993.
Varner registered the team's lowest scoring average of the year at 74.3 strokes per round. He posted seven top 20 finishes and three top 10s in 11 tournaments played. Varner posted 11 rounds of par or better, including eight rounds under-par.
Yale University is hosting one of six 54-hole regional tournaments. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
The finals will be conducted June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is the host institution for this year's championships.
