Volleyball Honored By NCAA For Academic Work

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The East Carolina volleyball squad was one of 17 athletic teams from Conference USA to earn the NCAA Public Recognition Award, based on the release of NCAA Division I 2009-10 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that ranked among the top 10 percent Wednesday.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete.
"We are proud of this achievement because many times volleyball can overshadow how much work is really put into academics," redshirt junior Britney Roper said. "We all work so hard in the classroom and set high expectations for ourselves so it feels good to see our hard work pay off."
Seven other Conference USA schools produced teams on the list as ECU and Memphis were the lone volleyball teams recognized in the league.
The APR considers eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
"We are very proud of the success we are seeing in this area," C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky stated. "Our Academic Progress Rates continue to rise, and half of our student-athletes have grade point averages of 3.0 or better. This is at the heart of what we do in intercollegiate athletics."
