GREENVILLE, N.C. --- East Carolina sophomore Harold Varner will make his NCAA debut Thursday as he competes as an individual entry at the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship on the Course at Yale. Yale's venue is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments on May 20-22.
Varner is scheduled to tee off with Michael Yiu of Columbia University and Josh Edelson of Lafayette College at 10 a.m. from the No. 1 tee on Thursday.
Varner is the first ECU golfer since former standout Mike Teague in 1993 to earn an individual entry into the NCAA Men's Golf Championships. He enters the event on the 6,749-yard, par-70 layout with a team-low 74.37 stroke average in 11 events. The Second-Team All-Conference USA selection posted three top-10 finishes this spring, highlighted by a career-best tie for third at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in early March.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional advances to the finals.
The finals will be conducted June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is the host institution for this year's championships.
