Varner Concludes Competition At NCAA Regional

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - East Carolina sophomore Harold Varner posted a score of even-par 70 in the final round of the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional Saturday at The Course At Yale.
Varner concluded the tournament with a three-round total of three-over-par 213 (71-72-70) to finish in a tie for 33rd place.
"Harold played well today and I am very proud of how he competed all week," said Pirate head coach Press McPhaul. "It was a great accomplishment for him to qualify for the NCAA Regional and represent ECU in the postseason."
Starting his final round on the back nine of the par 70, 6,749 yard layout, Varner was one-under through the first three holes until carding a bogey on par-four fourth. The Gastonia, N.C. product pared the next five holes to finish the back nine with a score of par 35.
On the front nine Varner birdied No. 1 to improve to one-under before he bogeyed No. 4 to fall back to even-par. He pared the final five holes to finish the round.
Kent State and Texas tied for the top spot while UCLA, Penn State and Virginia also advanced to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships in that order. Those five teams join 25 others from five other regionals at the June 1-6 NCAA Championships at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
East Tennessee State's Rhys Enoch, who finished at seven-under-par after carding a 70 today, earned the individual qualifier spot from the regional. He tied with Penn State's T.J. Howe as overall individual medalist with a 203.
