IRVING, TEXAS - East Carolina senior tennis players Bryan Oakley and Stephen Whitwell have been named to the All-Conference USA Second Team, according to an announcement by the league Wednesday.
Whitwell played at the top of the ECU lineup, turning in an overall record of 13-12 (.520) during the spring. He served primarily as the Pirates' No. 2 entry (10-6), but also experienced action at No. 1 (1-4) and No. 3 (2-2). Whitwell posted the program's top regular season C-USA record (3-0), tallying victories at the No. 2 slot against Tulane's Joe Young (7-5, 6-4), UAB's Danny Manlow (7-6, 6-2) and Southern Miss' Diego Machuca (6-2, 6-3) during the weekend of April 1-3 in New Orleans. He enjoyed winning streaks of four (twice) and three matches during the campaign and captured seven of nine from March 19 to April 10. Eleven of his 13 wins occurred in straight sets and he stretched two of his last four opponents to three sets, including a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) marathon against UCF's Brock Sakey in first-round action at the C-USA Tournament.
Oakley posted East Carolina's highest singles winning percentage (.773) during the spring season. He was the Pirates' co-leader in victories with 17, while dropping just five decisions. Oakley anchored the bottom of the lineup, tallying a 12-4 mark at No. 6 and a 5-1 ledger at No. 5. In C-USA matches, he was 2-0 - defeating Tulane's Trevor Getz (7-6, 6-1) and UAB's Dan Cornei (6-1, 6-2) in the No. 6 slot. Oakley closed the campaign by winning eight of his last nine affairs and 15 of his final 17. He enjoyed winning streaks of seven (Feb. 20-March 21) and six (March 24-April 11) and never suffered a losing streak longer than two matches all season - that only occurred once. Additionally, Oakley captured 16 of his 17 wins in straight-set fashion.
