GREENVILLE, N.C. - After claiming its first Conference USA regular season and tournament titles, the East Carolina softball team announced Friday the addition of three more freshmen to next year's roster. Chelsea-Lee Kaluhiokalani-Glackin, Jasmine Robbins and Abby Wynne have signed national letters-of-intent to attend East Carolina and play with the Pirates beginning in the fall of 2010. The trio joins Alexandra Fieldhouse, Jill Jelnick, Rebecca Lee, Jordan Lewis, Mahrisch Medina and Kristi Oshiro, who all signed with East Carolina in November.
Chelsea-Lee Kaluhiokalani-Glackin, Outfield/Infield, 5-7, Waianae, Hawai'i (Saint Francis)
Kaluhiokalani-Glackin was a four-year letterwinner at Saint Francis. The switch-hitter batted .387 as a senior. After her final campaign, she was selected to play in the New City Nissan Goodwill Softball Classic, featuring some of the best players from Hawai'i. Her junior season, she was an All-Hawai'i Star Bulletin selection after hitting .405 and slugging .544. In the summer, Kaluhiokalani-Glackin played for the Team Hawai'i Gold travel club.
Kaluhiokalani-Glackin on Choosing East Carolina: "I chose ECU because I felt that it was going to be the best fit for me. I enjoyed the campus, the team and the facilities the athletes use to succeed. I'm very excited that the school has the major of my choice [exercise physiology]. From what I have heard, it is a great program."
Associate head coach Natalie Kozlowski on Kaluhiokalani-Glackin: "Chelsea will bring much needed athleticism to the outfield. She is a smooth fielder and her speed will be valuable not only in the grass, but offensively as well. We look forward to having Chelsea on our Pirate squad."
Jasmine Robbins, Outfield, 5-3, Indian Trail, N.C. (Providence Day)
Robbins has been a three-year starter and varsity letterwinner for Providence Day High School. All three seasons, she has been named to the First Team All-Charlotte Independent School Athletic Association (CISAA) and All-North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA) squads. Her freshman campaign, she led the Chargers to a third-place showing at the NCISAA State Tournament. A season later, she batted .444 and scored 31 runs while stealing 20 bases and guiding Providence Day to its first-ever CISAA championship and a fourth-place finish at the state tournament. As a junior, she again batted over .400, threw a no hitter against Charlotte Christian and won Providence Day School Supporting Athlete-of-the-Year award. She also played for the North Carolina team in the Battle of the Border Showcase Games against a South Carolina squad. Robbins enjoyed additional success on the basketball court, helping the Chargers to NCISAA Championships as a freshman and sophomore. Over the summer, Robbins played for the Lady Blues of Belmont, N.C. Aside from her athletic accomplishments, she is an officer for the Cultural Alliance club as well as a member of the church choir and Keyettes Club.
Robbins on Choosing East Carolina: "The reason I chose ECU was because I really like the personalities of Coach Kee and Coach Kozlowski. They are interested in the total individual, not just the softball player."
Kozlowski on Robbins: "Each time we watched Jazz compete, the more excited we got about her. She is a true outfielder who packs both speed and power into her small frame. Her future in a Pirate uniform is very bright."
Abby Wynne, Catcher/Utility, 5-5, Catcher/Outfield, 5-8, Bethel, N.C. (North Pitt)
Local North Pitt standout Wynne has been a four-year starter for the Panthers. She is a three-time First-Team All-Eastern Plains and Daily Reflector All-County selection. Wynne has also picked up a trio of North Carolina Softball Coaches Association All-District Region I and All-State honors. Three times in her career she has been selected to the N.C. State Games. Her junior season, she batted .473 with 30 RBIs and 29 runs. She was also a standout volleyball player at North Pitt, earning three varsity letters and first team all-conference honors as a sophomore and junior. Wynne was named the North Pitt High School Female Athlete-of-the-Year as a junior. She competed for the Carolina Diamonds and Pitt Country Girls Softball League summer travel teams. In 2009, she was part of the Pitt County Babe Ruth All-Star World Series championship team. Off the field, Wynne is an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society. Her 3.67 grade-point average ranks her 17th out of 161 students in her graduating class.
Wynne on Choosing East Carolina: "I chose East Carolina because it felt more like home than any other school I visited. Not only is ECU great athletically, but it is great academically, which made my choice so much easier. Everything just felt like it was in place when I visited. After I left, I knew I was going to ECU next year. I couldn't have found another school with a better all-around fit for me. I felt comfortable with all of the players and the coaches because they were so welcoming. I couldn't ask for a better team to be playing on, or better coaches to instruct me."
Head coach Tracey Kee on Wynne: "Abby's athleticism will allow us to look at her in multiple positions. She's a great competitor and a true Pirate, as both parents are ECU alumni."
