
Varner Wins U.S. Amateur Qualifying Tournament

ADVANCE, N.C. --- East Carolina golfer Harold Varner shot a two-round total of 137 to qualify for the 2010 United States Amateur Championships, to be played August 23-29 at at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
Varner, a rising junior from Gastonia, N.C., shot 69-68 to win the sectional qualifier at the Oak Valley Golf Club on July 26-27.
Varner becomes the second ECU golfer to qualify for the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championships. Fellow classmate Adam Stephenson earned one of six qualifying spots from the sectional qualifier at the Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham earlier this month.
Qualifying players will participate in 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying Aug. 23-24. The 64 lowest scorers will begin match play on Aug. 25. The 36-hole championship final match will be played Sunday, Aug. 29.
