GREENVILLE, N.C. - It has been 270 days since the East Carolina volleyball team closed out its 2009 campaign. The Pirates came together again Tuesday lacking eight members from that squad. However, eight newcomers have joined forces with five returners to help second-year head coach Pati Rolf commence the 34th season in program history.
After arriving in Greenville Monday, the Pirates took to the hardwood at Eppes Middle School yesterday for the first of two sessions. Due to the refinishing of the floor at Minges Coliseum, the squad will have to wait until next Monday to utilize its home court.
Tuesday's workouts featured individual fundamental work as well as 6-on-6 scrimmaging. Emphasis was placed on putting the setters in the right place off of the initial pass and offensive tempo. Each player received equal amounts of instruction time, which is imperative as ECU is breaking in two rookie setters.
The Pirates will turn in two-a-day sessions six days a week as well as travel to the outer banks for a team retreat until classes begin on the 24th. The in-season schedule then kicks in with one practice daily before Charlotte, Cleveland State and Liberty invade Greenville on the 27th and 28th for the season-opening East Carolina Classic.
