Campbell Edges East Carolina, 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team held a 2-1 advantage after three sets, but Campbell rallied to post a 3-2 (25-23, 24-26, 27-29, 25-23, 15-13) victory Friday in the first match of the Wake Forest Black/Gold Challenge at Reynolds Gymnasium. The Pirates are now 0-7 overall while the Camels improved to 2-7.
Junior Amanda Lutzow picked up her second double-double of the season, racking up 16 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Shelby Beasley set her career high in the back row as she collected a team-high 19 digs. Additionally, senior Marina Gusman-Brown was credited with 18 digs, her personal best in an ECU uniform, while Nicole Jones also reached double figures with 12. At the net, redshirt sophomore Kelly Derby registered seven blocks while freshman Kasey Kavanaugh handed out 43 assists in her debut at setter.
The first set was tight to begin with as each team had only a two-point lead at most. However, Campbell went ahead 17-14 on an attack error by Britney Roper, drawing a timeout from the Pirate sideline. ECU quickly tied the score with three-straight points, but the Camels took the lead right back and held on for a two-point victory in the set.
The Pirates captured a 9-5 advantage to begin the second frame and held it much of the way through. However, with East Carolina holding three set points at 24-21, Campbell used two kills as part of a 3-0 run to tie the score. Lutzow and Derby then recorded a kill and a block, respectively to ensure a set win for the Pirates.
ECU took a 5-2 advantage in the third interval on four kills and a block but the Camels eventually rallied to knot the score at 15. Campbell would go ahead by as much as 23-20, forcing a Pirate timeout, but East Carolina received a kill from Lutzow as well as a service ace from Beasley to go along with a Camel attack error to stay alive and tie the proceedings at 23. The teams then traded points all the way to 27 before a Roper kill and a Derby ace gave the Pirates the set.
ECU was ahead by as much as three and as late as 21-18, but Campbell rallied once more and out-scored the Pirates 7-2 to send the match to a fifth frame.
The final set was one of runs, as the Camels jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to have East Carolina score seven consecutive points to take a 7-4 advantage. However, Campbell responded with its own 7-0 stretch to go ahead for good. The Pirates pulled within one at 14-13 on a Camel attack error, but Lutzow ended the match with a service error.
Campbell enjoyed the advantage in hitting (.173-.119) and kills (64-56), but ECU came out on top on defense, picking up 78 digs to the Camels' 75, as well as blocking (9.0-6.0)
The Pirates close out tournament play tomorrow with two matches against West Virginia and Wake Forest at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
