
Pirates In Second At VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - The East Carolina men's golf team wrapped up the second round of the 2010 Verizon VCU Shootout in second-place Monday after shooting rounds of 282-289 (571), finishing the day five-under par. The Pirates are seven strokes behind first-place UNC Wilmington.
Junior Harold Varner shot two remarkable rounds, 70-67 (137) to finish tied for the individual lead at seven-under. After shooting two-under during the morning's first round, Varner sank six birdies during the second round to move up four places into a first-place tie with Iowa State's Nate McCoy (69-68). Varner finished fourth at the event last season.
Varner's second round score of 67 was the lowest score of the day. UNCW's Josh Brock also fired a 67 during the second round.
ECU senior Warren Straub (70-72=142) and junior David Watkins (68-74=142) are part of a foursome tied for eighth-place at two-under. Watkins was tied for the overall lead at the conclusion of the first round before shooting two over in the afternoon. Straub shot two under during the morning round, but fired an even-par 72 during round two to fall five strokes off the pace.
Juniors Conner Sock and Jake Colley made their season debuts Monday. Sock stands at nine-over (74-79=153), while Colley carded a 12-over (80-76=156).
The Pirates ended the first round with a three-shot lead over second-place Wake Forest. ECU shot six-under as team in round one and then fired a second round score of one-over as UNCW carded a team tally of 12-under during the afternoon to take over the lead.
Wake Forest (285-289) and Richmond (287-287=574) are tied for third-place at two-under. All other nine teams in the field are over-par through two rounds.
The third round is scheduled for an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday. Live scoring for the VCU Shootout will be available through Golfstat.com.
