ECU Sweeps Dual Meet With ODU

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina swimming and diving teams returned to action Saturday with a dual meet sweep of Old Dominion at Minges Natatorium. Jenna Stewart led the women's team with a pair of individual victories and helped the 200 and 400 free relay team to first-place finishes. On the men's side, the Pirates won the meet in the final event with the Geoffrey Bobsin touching just ahead of Sidni Hoxha to win the 400 free relay.
"It was an unbelievable meet," Pirate coach Rick Kobe said. "The ladies were very dominant and the guys were so resilient. It came down to the final event for them and they came through. It was a great atmosphere in Minges and a terrific win for both our squads."
The men's team won their fifth consecutive dual meet to improve to 6-1 this season after a 153.5-146.5 victory over the Monarchs. The women's team cruised to a 182-116 win improving to 6-2 in dual meets.
For the women's team, Stewart won the 50 free (23.59) and the 100 free (51.20). She also swam the second leg of the top 200 (1:46.01) and 400 free relay teams (3:33.85).
Alongside Stewart, Kelsey Brosi added a pair of event victories. Brosi won the 200 free (1:53.37) and the 500 free (5:02.71). She also swam the third leg on the 400 free relay team.
The women's team had 1-2-3 performances in both breaststroke events. Stephanie Harper (1:04.95) just edged teammate Natalia Favoreto (1:04.96) in the 100 followed by Jessica Brinkley (1:06.53) in third-place. Favoreto (2:24.34) touched ahead of Harper (2:25.06) in the 200 with Elizabeth Oliver (2:25.11) finishing third.
Anna Gibas took first-place in the 200 back (2:04.26).
The ECU ladies also swept the diving events, finishing first through fifth. Meghan Coyne earned first-place on the one and three-meter boards.
In men's action, Thiago Cavalcanti won the 500 (4:38.98) and 1000 free (9:34.97) while he claimed second-place in the 200 fly (1:53.69). He also swam the third leg of the meet clinching 400 free relay.
J.D. Flanagan also won a pair of events with a first-place finish in the 100 (51.24) and 200 fly (1:53.63).
Attila Kiraly won the 200 back (1:53.25).
The men's diving team finished first, third and fourth on the one-meter board with Andrew Galvagni earning a first-place finish and qualifying for the NCAA Zone Championships in March. Tyler Dunsmore captured first-place on the three-meter board with ECU claiming first, second and fifth in the event.
ECU returns to action next weekend with a pair of home meets. The Pirates will host South Carolina on Friday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. before welcoming Catawba and Gardner-Webb for their final home meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 22.
