
Pirates Drop Dual Meet To South Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- In its second home meet of the semester, East Carolina dropped a dual meet to South Carolina on Friday at Minges Natatorium. The women were defeated 168-128, while the men were beaten 163.5-128.5.
"It was a very close and competitive meet," Pirate head coach Rick Kobe said. "We swam very well against an extremely talent team."
Freshman Anna Gibas picked up two wins as she placed first in the 100 (57.90) and 200-yard backstroke (2:04.53). She was the only individual event winner for the ECU ladies, which had five second-place finishes.
Conference USA Swimmer-of-the-Week Jenna Stewart placed second in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle. Holly Berenotto, Natalia Favoreto and Hannah Lee finished second in the 200 free, 100 fly and 200 fly, respectively.
Kelsey Brosi joined Stewart, Berenotto and Favoreto on the 400-yard free relay team which set a new pool record with a time of 3:29.54.
Senior Andrew Stoker was the lone first-place finisher on the men's side for the Pirates. Stoker won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.61 and placed second in the 200 (1:51.39).
Senior Thiago Cavalcanti earned second-place in the 500 and 1000 free, while Travis Stauder placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Ailton Temotio (50 free) and Attila Kiraly (200 back) also recorded second-place finishes.
East Carolina dominated the diving events with junior Meghan Coyne earning a first-place score on the one and three-meter boards on the women's side. Sophomore Tyler Dunsmore captured first-place in the men's one-meter diving competition.
The Pirates will host their final home meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 22 against Catawba and Gardner-Webb. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
