Pirates End Home Slate With Tri-Meet Sweep

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina swimming and diving teams closed out their 2010-11 home schedule in style with dominating wins in tri-meet against Catawba and Gardner-Webb at Minges Natatorium on Saturday.
With the victories, the men's team improved to 8-2 this season and the ladies' squad advanced its record to 8-3.
The Pirates claimed the top three spots in six events and won 18 of the first 19 events before swimming the final eight events as exhibitions.
After ECU opened the meet by winning both the 200-yard medley relays, the Pirates placed first, second and third in the women's and men's 400 IM and the women's 200-yard freestyle.
Lauren Dufault won the women's 400 IM followed by Elizabeth Oliver in second place and Kristen Giese came in third. Attila Kiraly won the men's 400 IM, finishing nearly eight seconds ahead of second-place finisher Turner Haigwood. Jonathan Bailey came in third.
Kelsey Brosi led the sweep of the women's 200 free followed by Holly Berenotto and Anna Gibas.
Berenotto was also part of the Pirates' sweep of the top three place in the 100-yard freestyle. She finished second behind event-winner Natalia Favoreto and in front of third-place finisher Kali Gaskill.
The Pirates also took the top three spots in the women's 100-yard backstroke. Kylie Francis finished first with a time of 58.54 followed by Brosi and Heather O'Toole.
Cailtin Marsillii touched first in the women's 500-yard freestyle with Brittany Radcliffe and Michelle Gadowry following behind.
The Pirates also finished one and two in three additional events.
Jenna Stewart touched in front of Francis in the women's 50-yard freestyle as did Andrew Stoker did ahead of J.D. Flanagan in the men's 100-yard butterfly.
On the diving boards, Meghan Coyne won the women's one-meter competition and Andrew Galvagni posted the highest score on the men's three-meter board.
The Pirates will return to action Saturday, Feb. 5 at William & Mary for its final dual meet of the season.
