
Pirates Split Matches In Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team tallied a 1-1 record in matches against Old Dominion and Norfolk State over the weekend. The Pirates dropped their opening match of the weekend to Old Dominion, 5-2, but rallied to defeat Norfolk State, 5-1.
East Carolina has compiled a 5-2 record after three weeks of dual match competition.
In the weekend opener against Old Dominion Friday, Henrik Skalmerud and Mario Martinez posted the Pirates' lone singles victories. Skalmerud defeated Alfredo Rodriguez at No. 5 (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Martinez won at No. 6 over Clay Cypert (1-6, 6-3, 6-4). Skalmerud teamed with Stian Tvedt to defeat Ben Chomette and Fahoum Fahoum at No. 2 doubles for the Pirates only doubles win.
Saturday against Norfolk State, only singles matches were contested due to time constraints with East Carolina winning five times. Massimo Mannino, Skalmerud. John Schmitt, Martinez and David Masciorini were victorious at flight No. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively.
The Pirates will return to dual meet competition Sunday, Feb. 20 at home against Appalachian State. The meet is scheduled to start at 12 noon.
