GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad captured all six singles matches, five in straight sets, and swept doubles play to record a 7-0 non-conference victory over Barton Saturday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The win, which also served as the Lady Pirates' second shutout of the 2011 campaign, improved ECU's overall spring dual match record to 3-1. Barton fell to 1-2 with the loss.
East Carolina opened the match by capturing the doubles point as two of the three tandems tallied 8-1 victories. Tamara Sachs and Petra Vogel defeated Carol Fischer and Lindsey Frederick at No. 2, while Audrey LePottier and Abby Richmond posted similar results in a No. 3 matchup against Francesca Del Pozo and Kristy Lievense. The Lady Pirates' No. 1 pair, Jessica Cook and Kristin Gordon, closed out doubles play with an 8-4 triumph over Mika Deane and Lindsay Toth.
ECU continued to roll in singles action, notching straight-set triumphs and surrendering only five points in the last five slots. Natalie Collins (6-1, 6-1 at No. 2), Neena Wanko (6-0, 6-0 at No. 3), Yilian Zhang (6-0, 6-2 at No. 4), Sachs (6-0, 6-1 at No. 5) and Richmond (6-0, 6-0 at No. 6) all cruised to victories to secure the team win. Freshman Manon Bissat was pushed to a tie-breaker by Barton's Mika Dean before earning a 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 decision.
The Lady Pirates will return to action Monday when they host Campbell in a match scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
