GREENVILLE, N.C. - After a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Towson Friday, East Carolina continues action at the Pirate Clash Saturday afternoon. The Pirates face Fairfield (1-1) and Lehigh (0-1) at approximately 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
East Carolina Versus Fairfield
The Pirates hold a 9-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Stags. The teams met at least once a season from 2001-06 with the last contest taking place March 4, 2006, at the Pirate Classic with ECU claiming a 2-1 win. Fairfield's lone victory in series history was a 5-0 triumph Feb. 23, 2002, also at the Pirate Classic.
The last time the two teams met, the Pirates used a first-inning sacrifice fly by Alison Monce to take a 1-0 lead. The Stags' Tara Hansen homered in the fourth to tie the game, but Ashley Quick's sacrifice fly drove in Vanessa Moreno in the fifth inning for the game-winning run. Keli Harrell recorded the win in the circle with a complete-game 10-strikeout performance. The only hit she allowed was the Hansen home run.
Pirates Taking On Lehigh
East Carolina has claimed the only two meetings with the Mountain Hawks, winning 9-0 March 20, 1994, and 11-4 March 3, 2000. The first meeting was part of the Pirate Classic in Greenville while the second contest took place at the Dixie Millennium Classic in Virginia Beach, Va.
In the first game, ECU scored two runs in the first, four in the third and three in the fourth to back Jill Rowlands' complete-game victory. The second game had Amekea McDougald go 4-4 and score four times and Beth Bridger drive in three runs. Hillary Halpern picked up the win throwing the first four innings.
A Spark At The Top
Freshman Kristi Oshiro stepped into the leadoff spot of East Carolina's lineup Feb. 18 and has been the ultimate table setter. She has posted a .517 on-base percentage with eight walks drawn and seven hits. Against St. John's on the 18th, Oshiro went 2-4, drove in a pair of runs and scored another.
During the last seven games, she has scored 10 of the Pirates' 35 runs (28.6 percent) and accounted for 12 of the 35 (34.3 percent).
Walk This Way
In Oshiro's nine games batting leadoff, she has started the ECU first inning with a walk six times.
... And Not A Bad No. 2 Hitter
Behind Oshiro in the batting order is fellow freshman and Mililani High School teammate Rebecca Lee, who hit .500 during the last seven games. Lee has produced a .667 on-base percentage with seven walks and seven hits.
The left-handed batter also drove in a pair of runs and scored five. She delivered the game-ending run in Sunday's 8-0 victory over St. John's and went 3-3 with a run batted in versus Kent State last Saturday night.
Another Freshman, More Hits
After struggling through a 2-17 (.118 batting average) start to her career, freshman Jordan Lewis has turned it around in her last seven games, going 9-18 (.500 BA) and scoring seven runs. In the initial six games of the year, Lewis accounted for only one run, struck out eight times and drew one walk. During the last seven contests, she has scored seven times, driven in six runs, fanned just three times and drawn five walks.
Against Towson Friday, Lewis had a career game, going 3-4 and driving in four runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth inning. She also hit her first career home run.
