Campbell Highlights | Paisley Reaches 1,000 Career Strikeouts
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina closed its 11-game homestand on an eight-game winning streak as it topped Campbell 6-0 Sunday afternoon. The victory over the Camels (8-7) gave the Pirates their 16th consecutive triumph over teams from the state of North Carolina as they have outscored the foes 103-12. Senior Toni Paisley recorded the win for the Pirates (12-4) and became the first player in East Carolina and Conference USA history to record 1,000 career strikeouts. Freshman Jordan Lewis and senior Sissy Jimenez led the offense with two runs batted in apiece.
Paisley (10-2) struck out eight in the game to push her career total to 1,005. She allowed only two hits and did not walk a batter. The blanking was Paisley's seventh solo shutout of the season and 48th of her career. Brittany Arnn (3-2) was saddled with the loss for Campbell as she allowed five runs, three earned, on just three hits. She walked five and also struck out one. Olivia Scarborough came in for the Camels and threw the final inning, surrendering one run on two hits and a walk.
The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as freshman Kristi Oshiro led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on a one-out single through the right side by junior Suzanne Riggs. The RBI was Riggs' 14th of the homestand. A fielder's choice and pop out ended the Pirate threat.
After striking out the last two batters in the top of the first, Paisley recorded strikeout No. 1,000 of her career in the top of the second, fanning the inning's leadoff batter, Taylor McGee.
Both teams went quietly until the bottom of the third, when East Carolina made its lead 3-0. Oshiro drew her second walk of the game with one out and stole second base. Freshman Rebecca Lee chopped a ball back to Arnn and beat it out for an infield single, moving Oshiro to third. Lee stole second and Riggs drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Lewis came through with a single to right field, driving in Oshiro and keeping the bases full. It was Oshiro's 15th run scored since returning home from the season-opening weekend. A groundout to the shortstop by Jimenez plated Lee and moved Riggs and Lewis up a base. Junior Priscilla Velasquez closed the inning with a groundout back to Arnn.
Campbell tallied its first hit of the game in the top of the fourth when Sarah Forgacs singled through the right side with one out. Paisley retired the next two batters on groundouts to retire the side and end the threat.
The Pirates added to their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lee led off with a walk before Riggs sent a grounder to the second baseman, who had the ball roll between her legs and into right center. Lee went to third and Riggs to second on the error. Lewis grounded out to the shortstop to drive in Lee and Jimenez grounded out to third to plate Riggs for the 5-0 lead. The RBI was Lewis' ninth of the homestand as she finished the 11-game stretch with a .452 batting average, 14 hits and 10 runs scored.
East Carolina scored the game's final run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-0. Sophomore pinch hitter Cicely Lopez started the inning with a walk before consecutive singles by freshmen Mahrisch Medina and Jill Jelnick loaded the bases with no outs. After a fly out to left field, sophomore Kai Clark hit into a fielder's choice that forced Jelnick out at second but brought in Lopez. Riggs lined out to Scarborough to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Paisley sent down Campbell in order on a line out, groundout and strikeout looking to preserve the shutout.
For the homestand, ECU batted .343 as a team and outscored its opponents 66-16. The Pirates slugged .473 and posted an on-base percentage of .457 during the 11 games.
Next up for the Pirates is a spring-break trip to Tempe, Ariz., and Arizona State University for the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational. ECU begins the event Friday with a 3:00 p.m. ET contest against New Mexico State (14-3) before taking on the host and 12th ranked Sun Devils (12-1) at approximately 7:30 p.m.
