
Pirates Fall To S.C. State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - South Carolina State rebounded from a doubles point setback with five singles wins to secure a 5-2 men's tennis non-conference victory over East Carolina on Sunday.
The loss was the second in the last four matches for the Pirates, who dropped their record to 10-4.
In singles play, S.C. State's defeated Massimo Mannino 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot while Dmytro Kovalevych posted a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Jaroslav Horvath at No. 2. Anton Protsenko followed by picking up a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 over Henrik Skalmerud before Artemiy Nikitin handled John Schmitt (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 5 position and David Grund outlasted Stian Tvedt 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Pirates' only singles victory came at the No. 3 slot as Joran Vliegen rolled past Peters Vinogradous 6-4, 6-3.
East Carolina opened the match by winning two of three doubles contests to take an early 1-0 lead. Horvath and Vliegen paired up for an 8-6 triumph over Vinogradous and Gabriel Meana at the No. 1 flight while Skalmerud and Tvedt handed Kovalevych and Radek Langer an 8-6 loss at No. 2.
ECU will return to action Wednesday, March 23 when it travels to Greensboro to take on UNC Greensboro at 2 p.m.
