
Men's Tennis Falls To Binghamton, 6-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Binghamton used a doubles victory and wins in five of six singles matches to hand East Carolina a 6-1 non-conference setback Friday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
After the Bearcats' tandem of Alexandre Haggai and Arnav Jain opened doubles play with an 8-3 defeat of seniors Henrik Skalmerud and Stian Tvedt at the No. 2 slot, Binghamton (4-12) clinched the doubles point when Sven Vloedgraven and Gilbert Wong defeated senior Jaroslav Horvath and freshman Joran Vliegen 9-8 (4) at No. 1. Sophomores Massimo Mannino and Nathaniel Smiley gave the Pirates' No. 3 pair an 8-0 win over Ruben Haggai and Bastian Bornkessel.
In singles play, Vloedgraven and Jain pushed Binghamton's lead to 3-0 with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively, as Vloedgraven rolled past Horvath (6-2, 6-2) and Jain dispatched Mannino (6-4, 6-3). Alexandre Haggai clinched the Bearcats' team win by recording a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of John Schmitt at the No. 4 flight before Wong handed Vliegen a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0(4) loss at No. 3 and Ruben Haggai netted a three-set victory against junior David Masciorini at No. 6.
Tvedt posted East Carolina's (12-6) only singles triumph of the afternoon by rallying past Ruben Devos 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a No. 5 matchup.
The Pirates will be in Hattiesburg, Miss. the first weekend in April to face a trio of Conference USA foes beginning Friday, April 1 against Tulane at 10 a.m.
