AIKEN, S.C. --- East Carolina senior Harold Varner carded a two-round total of two-under 138 to grab a share of second-place after 36 holes of competition a the 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate being held at the 6,565-yard, par 70 Palmetto Golf Club.
Varner shot one-over par in the first round, before carding a three-under par in round two. He is six shots behind individual leader Bud Cauley of Alabama, who fired a four-under par 66 in each round to end the day at eight-under 132.
As a team, East Carolina is in eighth-place after the inaugural two rounds. The Pirates carded a total team tally of 578 in the two rounds. ECU finished round one with a team score of 293 before improving by eight strokes with a 285 in the second round.
Alabama is in the lead after the first day with a team score of 565 (288-277). They are four strokes ahead of current second-place team Liberty (285-284=569) and five strokes ahead of Virginia (291-280=571) and Clemson (285-286=571), who are tied for third.
ECU junior David Watkins is 11 strokes off the lead at three-over 143. Watkins fired a three-over in the opening round before returning shoot par on the second set of 18 to move into a tie for 13th.
Zach Edmondson carded an eight-over 148 (74-74) Monday, Jake Colley shot a nine-over 149 (75-74) and senior Warren Straub fired a 10-over 150 (76-74).
Final round action in the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate is set for Tuesday morning.
