IRVING, Texas - Sweeping the weekly awards, East Carolina's Fanny Wolte and Harold Varner have been named the Conference USA Golfers-of-the Week. Wolte earned individual honors at the Barefoot at the Beach Challenge, posting a career-low performance of 2-under par 214, while helping the Pirates earn the team title. Varner tallied his best finish of the season with a runner-up showing at the 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Wolte claimed her first collegiate individual title at the Barefoot at the Beach Challenge with a career-low round of two-under par 214. She fired an opening round of 69, a tournament and career-low 18-hole score, and cruised to the tournament title as she led all three rounds. Wolte rebounded from a three-over par second round to post a two-under 70, winning the event by three strokes.
The freshman helped the Pirates (891) record their second team title of the year and 20th since the program's inception in 2000. It was also the Pirates' fourth Top-5 team finish on the season and their tournament score of 891, which was a nine-stroke advantage over second-place Wisconsin, was the 10th-lowest 54-hole total in school history. Wolte led the 85-player field in par-3 scoring (2.67/four-under), par-4 scoring (3.90/three-under) and birdies (14). It was Wolte's second career Top-10 finish and the third Top-20 placement of her career. The freshman earns her first Golfer of the Week honor.
Varner posted his best finish of the season with a runner-up performance at the 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. The senior fired a three-round, 4-under 206 tournament total. Varner posted rounds of 71-67-68 en route to posting one of only three under-par tournament scores. His final-round 68 led the 90-player field. It was his third top-5 finish of the season. Varner earns the second Golfer of the Week accolade of the season (Oct. 27) and the third of his career.
