
ECU Men's Tennis Advances To C-USA Quarterfinals

TULSA, Okla. - Eighth-seed East Carolina picked up a 4-1 win over No. 9 seed Southern Miss in the first round of the 2011 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Pirates (13-10) will now face top seed and host Tulsa (16-7) at 12 p.m. EDT Friday.
Due to inclement weather in the area, today's contest began indoor with ECU winning the double points. John Schmitt and Massimo Mannino defeated Alex Doleac and Michael Sims of Southern Miss 8-2 at the No. 3 position. USM's Julien Roussel Roussel and Jan Burmeister then evened the doubles portion of the match up with a 9-7 victory over Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen at the one spot. Jovan Zeljkovic and Paulo Alvarado could not hold on against ECU's Henrik Skalmerud and Stian Tvedt in the No. 2 doubles match. The Pirates' duo won 9-7 to give East Carolina a 1-0 advantage entering singles play.
Tvedt and Skalmerud quickly took ECU's lead to 3-0 with wins at the respective bottom two singles positions. Tvedt swept Doleac, 6-1, 6-1, while Skalmerud tallied a straight-set shutout over Sims, 6-0, 6-0.Putting the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard was Roussel at the No. 1 singles slot. He handed Horvath a pair of 6-3 set losses before Schmitt ended the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Zeljkovic at No. 4 singles.
