Pair Of Pirates Earn All-Academic Team Honors

IRVING, Texas --- East Carolina senior Jaroslav Horvath and sophomore Massimo Mannino were named to the Conference USA Men's Tennis All-Academic Team, the league announced Thursday prior to the start of the 2011 C-USA Men's Tennis Championships, which will be held April 21-24, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus.
The honorary list consists of student-athletes who hold a minimum 3.2 GPA and competed in at least 75 percent of their team's scheduled matches as voted upon by the league's sports information contacts. Other recipients were Southern Miss senior Jan Burmeister, SMU sophomore Tobias Flood and Tulsa sophomore Clifford Marsland.
Horvath is a three-time member of the Men's Tennis All-Academic team and holds a 3.98 grade point average (GPA) as an economics major. The Velky Krtis, Slovakia, native is also a four-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal and was the 2010 men's tennis representative on the Potatsh Corp. Aurora ECU All-Academic Team, which is comprised of student-athletes who hold the highest GPA on their teams. On the courts, the senior has compiled a 12-6 doubles record alongside partner Joran Vliegen, playing all matches at the No. 1 spot.
Mannino earned his first all-academic honor with his 3.94 GPA as he also pursues his bachelor's degree as an economics major. A two-time recipient of the league's Academic Medal, he has posted an even 10-10 mark in singles play this season with most of his action coming at the top spot for the Pirates. To open dual competition, the Interlaken, Switzerland, native won five of his first six matches and helped East Carolina to victory with four of those wins.
Since Conference USA began selecting an all-academic team with the 2006-07 season, the ECU's men's tennis team has had six student-athletes voted onto the squad. It also earned the Sport Academic Award last season, which is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA for the current academic year.
