TEXARKANA, Ark. --- After shooting a seven-over 295 Monday, East Carolina remains in fourth-place through the first two rounds of the 2011 Conference USA Men's Golf Championships being held at the par 72, 6,935-yard Texarkana Country Club.
The Pirates have a two-day total of eight-over 584 and are seven strokes behind first-place Tulsa, who shot par Monday to assume the lead at one-over 577 (289-288). Memphis is in second-place at four-over 580 (281-299), followed by UCF at six-over 582 (293-289) in third-place. UAB (291-294=595) and Houston (288-297=585) are tied for fifth-place, eight strokes off the lead.
Individually, ECU junior David Watkins remains in contention for medalist honors after he carded a two-over 74 during the second round and is only three strokes out of first-place at one-under (69-74=143). Watkins, tied for sixth-place, is one of 10 golfers within four shots of the lead, shared by Memphis' Jonathan Fly (67-73=140) and Tulsa's John Young Kim (72-68=140) at four-under.
With the wet weather and extremely windy conditions, only five golfers registered a subpar score on Monday as opposed to 15 in Sunday's opening round. After a two-hour delay due to weather, championship action resumed under a shotgun start.
The Pirates' Jake Colley (74-72=146) and Harold Varner (72-74=146) are tied for 18th at two-over par. Colley moved up nine places with a second round score of par 72, while Varner slipped down a spot to with a two-over 74. Adam Stephenson carded a three-over 75 to drop to 31st at five-over (74-75=149), while Conner Sock stands tied for 48th at 13-over (76-81=157).
Tuesday's final round tees off at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start to get in front of some more impending weather in the forecast. The Pirates will be paired with UAB and Houston.
