ECU Men's Tennis Falls To UAB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- UAB took advantage of a doubles point and three singles wins, two coming in straight sets to down East Carolina 4-2 Sunday afternoon in Conference USA action at the USM Tennis Complex.

The Pirates fell to 11-8 overall and 1-3 against conference rivals with the setback, while the Blazers improved to 8-8 overall and 3-1 versus league opponents.

UAB's third-seeded doubles tandem, Daniel Moser/Lucas Dirube, clinched the opening point by defeating Massimo Mannino and Nathan Smiley 8-6 after the Blazers and Pirates had split the first two battles at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. UAB's David Zimmerman and Tom Puetz defeated Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen 8-2 after ECU's Henrik Skalmerud and Stian Tvedt opened play with an 8-2 triumph over Danny Manlow and Chris Helliar.

Mannino (6-4, 6-1 at No. 3) and Tvedt (7-6, 6-3 at No. 4) tallied singles wins for the Pirates as did Moser (6-2, 6-3 at No. 5) and Helliar (6-2, 6-4 at No.6) before Zimmerman netted three-set decisions at No. 2 over Vliegen (5-7, 6-1, 6-2) to secure the victory.

The Pirates will return to competition Thursday, April 7 against Longwood in Farmville, Va.
