HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- A convincing doubles sweep and a split of six singles matches lifted East Carolina to a 4-3 win over Southern Miss on the second day of action at the Conference USA Shootout Saturday afternoon at the USM Tennis Complex.
With the victory, East Carolina ended its four-match losing streak and improved to 11-7 overall and 1-2 against Conference USA foes. Southern Miss fell to 3-16 overall and 0-3 versus league rivals.
East Carolina set the tone early as Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen teamed up for an 8-6 triumph over Jan Burmeister and Julien Roussel at the No. 1 position. Stian Tvedt and Henrik Skalmerud followed by adding an 8-4 win over Paulo Alvarado and Jovan Zeljkovic at No. 2. Nathan Smiley and Massimo Mannino won at No. 3 by default.
In singles play, ECU also picked up straight-set victories at the No. 2 and No. 5 slots as Vliegen dismissed Jan Burmeister 6-0, 6-0 and John Schmitt handled Michael Sims 6-0, 6-0. Skalmerud won at No. 6 by default.
USM used wins by Roussel over Horvath (6-3, 4-6, 1-0) at No. 1, Alvarado over Mannino (6-3, 6-2) at No. 3 and Zeljkovic over Tvedt (6-4, 6-1) at No. 4 to capture the other three matches.
The Pirates return to action Sunday, April 3 against UAB.
