Pirates Second After 36 Holes At River Landing

WALLACE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team is in second-place after two rounds of play at the 2011 River Landing Intercollegiate being co-hosted by ECU and UNC Wilmington. The Pirates shot 283 through the first 18 holes and then carded a 10-under 278 and currently trails Liberty by six strokes with a 15-under 561 Friday at the par-72, 6,898-yard River Landing Country Club.
ECU has two of its five-man team members in the individual top 10 with junior David Watkins, last year's winner, sitting in a tie for second-place with a seven-under 137, highlighted by a second-round 68 with four birdies and no bogeys. Junior Harold Varner opened the tournament with a 71 and fired a 69 in the second round with seven birdies and one eagle. Varner is in 10th place at four-under 140, seven strokes off the lead.
Junior Adam Stephenson carded a one-over in the first round, but then shot four-under 68, with six birdies, during the afternoon to move into a tie for 11th at three-under 141. Junior Jake Colley finished the day at even-par 144 after shooting two-under in the morning and two-over in the afternoon. Freshmen Ryan Eibner and Jackson Stuckey, both playing as individuals, finished one stroke behind Colley at one-over. Junior Conner Sock fired a three-over 147 while senior Warren Straub and freshman Jack Keefe each compiled a 36-hole score of eight-over 152.
The Pirates posted seven of 16 rounds under-par Friday.
UNC Wilmington's Josh Brock, who finished runner-up at last year's tournament, holds a four-stroke lead over Watkins and N.C. State's Albin Choi with an 11-under 133 in the individual race. Liberty's Max McKay and Virginia's Bruce Woodall are tied for fourth-place at six-under 138 with Lamar's Kevin Hesbois and Liberty's Chase Marinell tied for sixth-place, six strokes off the lead.
ECU has a six stroke lead on Memphis for second-place, while trailing the first-place Flames by six. Liberty carded a 21-under 555, shooting 10-under during the first round and 11-under in the second. The Tigers fired a nine-under 567 to complete the first two rounds in third-place followed by UNC Wilmington at two-under and N.C. State at one-under.
The final 18 holes will get underway Saturday at 7:30 a.m. EDT.
