Pirates In Seventh At NCAA Regional

RADFORD, Va. - The East Carolina men's golf team concluded the first round of action at the 2011 NCAA Virginia Tech Regional at the par 72, 7,685-yard Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech in seventh-place. The Pirates opened regional action on Thursday by posting a 14-over team total tally of 302.
Juniors Harold Varner and David Watkins paced ECU during the first round as each carded a two-over 74 to finish tied for 15th. Both players, who were each First-Team All-Conference USA selections, recorded a pair of birdies.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Eibner trails his teammates by strokes at four-over 76 and is tied for 36th. Eibner also registered two birdies. Junior Adam Stephenson fired a six-over 78 and junior Jake Colley shot nine-over 81.
Fourth-ranked Georgia Tech is the leader after the first round of play at one-over 289, six strokes ahead of No. 16 Duke in second-place at seven-over. Kent State and Oklahoma are tied for third-place at eight-over followed by Coastal Carolina in fifth-place at 11-over. The top five teams in the field advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla.
Georgia Tech's Kyle Scott leads the field at four-under par 68, two shots in front of Abraham Ancer of Oklahoma with four players tied for third at one-under.
The second round of the 2011 NCAA Virginia Tech Regional will begin Friday morning. The Pirates will tee-off alongside Virginia Tech and Mississippi at 8 a.m.
