PEARL, Miss. - Senior Seth Maness and junior Corey Thompson were named to the 2011 Conference USA Championships All-Tournament Team the league announced Saturday evening following Rice's 4-3 win over Houston in 10 innings, which secured the Owls fourth C-USA crown in the last six years.
With the selection of Maness and Thompson to the all-tournament team, ECU has now had at least one player named since 2005, the longest active streak by any C-USA member school.
Maness, who also was named to the all-tournament team in 2010, earned this year's selection after tossing his second complete game shutout of the season and fourth complete game of the season Friday night against No. 19 Southern Miss. The Pinehurst, N.C. native allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out nine batters in ECU's 4-0 win. A year ago, Maness also defeated the Golden Eagles in post-season play where he gave up one run on five hits in 7.2 innings with eight punch outs in an 8-1 victory.
Thompson earned all-tournament honors on the hills of a fantastic post-season play where he batted a team-best .467 (7-for-15) with a home run and seven RBI. The Apex, N.C. native had multiple hits in drove in at least one RBI in all three games. In the tournament opener against Houston, Thompson was 2-for-5 with home run and three RBI. He followed that with three hits and another three-RBI performance in ECU's 4-2 win over Tulane where his one-out double in the 11th inning proved to be the game-winning hit that plated Mike Ussery and Philip Clark. On Friday against No. 19 Southern Miss, Thompson was 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
ECU, which is expected to make its 25th Regional appearance, will learn its post-season fate Monday afternoon when the field of 64 is released by the NCAA selection committee live on ESPN at 12:30 p.m. (EDT).
