BERMUDA RUN, N.C. --- Harold Varner, a rising senior on the East Carolina men's golf team, defeated UNC Greensboro rising senior Colin Chapman, 3 and 1 to win the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship Sunday at Bermuda Run Country Club. Varner, who won the N.C. Amateur Stroke title earlier this summer, became the first player to win both titles in the same year.
"Colin got off to a little rocky start by not making those birdies on one and two," Varner said. "He then knocked one in the water on four which allowed me to take the lead."
Varner, a native of Gastonia, opened match play with 2 and 1 win over Joe Jaspers of Huntersville followed by a 4 and 3 win over Raleigh's Alex Ehert in the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, Varner defeated Mark McMillen, Jr. of Smithfield, 5 and 4, before advancing to the finals with a 3 and 1 victory over Scott Harvey of Greensboro.
Varner's ECU teammate Jake Colley advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated.
Varner will participate in the U.S. Amateur Championships beginning August 22 in Erin Hills, Wis.
